In his first interview following the European Parliament elections, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis dismissed the possibility of an early election despite his party’s disappointing performance.

New Democracy received 28.3% of the vote, down from nearly 41% in the previous national elections.

“I believe in 4-year cycles,” Mitsotakis told Alpha TV, firmly stating, “There is no possibility of a snap election.” He emphasised that his government would continue implementing its policy agenda, saying, “We will proceed with the great reforms, we will step on the gas, not the brakes.”

Acknowledging the voters’ message, Mitsotakis hinted at a cabinet reshuffle, mentioning “corrective moves” and stating, “Ministers either change position or leave.” He stressed that ministers are judged on their effectiveness.

Addressing the high abstention rate of 59.5%, Mitsotakis attributed it to voter fatigue, noting that it was the seventh election in Greece since 2019.
