The renowned Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach on Zakynthos Island will remain off-limits for yet another year, as confirmed by a joint ministerial decision signed on May 2nd. The decision, endorsed by the Ministers of Citizens Protection, Island Policy, and Tourism, prolongs the closure of this iconic site.

Under the directive, all vessel circulation, anchoring, and swimming activities beyond an imaginary line stretching between the bay's north and south ends are strictly prohibited. Additionally, access to the beach from the rocky slope and the plateau above it is banned.

Visitors are also prohibited from approaching the shipwreck within 10 metres of the rocky slope.

The vessel, which ran aground in 1980 while smuggling contraband cigarettes, has since become a symbol of Zakynthos.

Navagio

The closure of Navagio Beach was initially enforced in 2018 due to a landslide, which led to its eventual reopening with restrictions. However, another landslide struck in 2022 following an earthquake, prompting authorities to extend the ban on beach access for both locals and tourists. This measure is set to endure through 2024.
